Pretty Woman starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts was released in 1990. This, for me, catapulted Julia Roberts to stardom. The film was about how Prince Charming rescues down-on-her-luck but charming prostitute Vivian Ward. I love the movie and I absolutely love the soundtrack.
Fresh-faced, charming Julia Roberts won my heart. She was perfectin this role although she was almost the last choice for the role. Richard Gere is swoon-worthy. Hector Elizondo as the kindly hotel manager was impeccable. I love how the actors made their roles their own. Not only was the film a blockbuster, it was a critical success as well.
Here’s the Pretty Woman Trailer:
And the soundtrack.. need I say more. “King of Wishful Thinking” and “Fallen” are my favorites up to now.
I remember a scene where Gere returns the necklace to the hotel manager and Elizondo saying, “It must be so difficult to let go of something beautiful”. I love how the film ends with Gere and Roberts kissing on the fire escape, then the camera fading out with the voice over.. “Welcome to Hollywood.. everybody has a dream…”
I watched the Golden Globes a few days ago. And I am so happy that Slumdog Millionaire, a movie set in India, with a relatively unknown cast of foreign actors won!!!!

Danny Boyle, Freida Pinto, Dev Patel
Truth be told, I haven’t watched the movie. What made me happy that it won Best Picture is that it paved the way for other “foreign films” out of the “Foreign Films” category into mainstream Hollywood. Year by year, this world of ours is turning out to be flatter and a more even playing ground for talented people around the world. This win will draw filmmakers to explore beyond the confines of Hollywood. Now, the ingredients of a great award winning and mass appealing movie are not just an A-list cast, a great story and a million dollar budget. The ingredients of a great movie will rightfully be – a great story, creative storytelling and talented cast.
Men are like wine, they say. Well, not all. But these men certainly age gracefully. I am only listing men above 50 years of age. Brad Pitt is 45 and George Clooney is 47, so I can’t include them.. yet. But they certainly are in the category of “Men are like wine.” =)
1. Bruce Willis
He made a bald 51-year old cop look sexy in his Die Hard 4.0 movie. At 5 decades old, he still portrayed the bad-ass devil-may-care cop realistically.
Original Die Hard Die Hard 2 or 3? Die Hard 4.0
2. Harrison Ford
He is expected to reprise his role as Indiana Jones. The new movie will be released next year. His quiet yet I-can-be- tough-if-the-situation-calls-for-it demeanor has made him a senstive action hero. He surely can still pull off the intellectual butt-kicking Dr. Jones in the next Indy movie to be released next year… at age 65!
Earlier Indiana Jones Post-Indiana Jones Movies Indy again.. to be released 2008
He was my favorite character in my all-time favorite movie, “Sneakers”. I loved him with Demi Moore in “Indecent Proposal”. He is still suave and sophisticated even at the age of 70.
in “The Sting” in “Indecent Proposal” taken in 2005
One can be born handsome and pretty. It is just an accident of nature and a combination of genes. When we are young, our bodies cooperate with us and we still have that tight firm skin giving us the glow of youth. But as the decades pile up on us, it takes discipline and for some, even money to maintain our health and physique. I also believe that making smart choices in ones professional and personal life also has an impact on how we age. Being happy and stress-free is one way to keep healthy.
Whatever these men did, they are certainly successful. It is sinful how good and fit they still look at 50, 60 and 70!
I have watched Spiderman 3, Shrek 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC) 3 as a dutiful mom with my son. Among them all, I loved the POTC the best. I have never cared for the Spiderman series. I mean the 3rd Spiderman was basically about a guy who treated his girlfriend like crap and still emerged as a hero. Shrek was fun but forgettable. But I enjoyed POTC – At World’s End.
Alright, alright, I am biased. I adore Johnny Depp and as long as Captain Jack Sparrow is on board, I will always be a fan. But there were good performances by Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, the monkey and theKeith Richards as Jack’s father as well. I loved the sexual tension between Jack and Elizabeth in POTC 2, but they downplayed it in POTC 3 with boring Will Turner emerging as Lizzie’s one true love.
True, true, critics have said that the plot was confusing. It is. I felt that the movie was too complicated with Calypso and Sao Feng characters serving to confuse and not entertain the viewers. But it was visually entertaining. The fight scene with the two boats entangled in a maelstrom was exciting and realistic. I just didn’t overanalyze the film’s plot, didn’t ask too many questions and just went with the flow of the action and I was entertained for 3 hours. I thought I got my money’s worth.
But speaking of part 3 movies , I still have to see a film that is at the same level or even surpassed its original as the Lord of the Rings Return of the King did. Oh well going back to POTC, if there is POTC 4, I will still line up of it as long as Jack Sparrow is still there. They can ditch the Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner characters for all I care but never Captain Jack. He’s an adorable scoundrel!
If all pirates were this charming…piracy wouldn’t be a crime =P
That is the question that sparked a debate between JC and myself with Cliff siding with JC at 2AM in the 70’s Club. Call it morbid curiosity or just the alcohol kicking in.
For the Spartans:
Granted, the Spartans have great combat skills. They even laughed at the cowardice of the Persians when the Persians showered them with arrows. The elves suck at combat. Did you see any elves left after the Battle at Helm’s Deep? No, I don’t think so, even the great Haldir died.
For the Elves:
BUT, the elves have magic and they can direct their arrows even through even the tiniest spaces. Think Paris in the movie Troy when he hit Achilles’ heel. The elves can do that and more.
Conclusion:
BUT then again, in LOTR, the elves only hit the ugly Orcs. Their was no remorse on their part because they were ridding Middle-Earth of ugliness. But the Spartans sport long muscualr physiques with 8 pack abs. How can the Elves destroy such beauty, such endorphine-rushing display of manliness??
After this beautiful logic expressed by JC, I conceed. The battle goes to the Spartans.
Lorenz disagrees.
