The malls during the holiday season were packed with people. That is not surprising. What is noteworthy though is that malls in the Philippines are still full of people in normal workdays in normal work hours. I went to a mall in LA on a weekday at around 2pm, the mall was almost empty. Try going to Glorietta at 2pm, you will see lots of people.
We love going to malls. Malls are our shopping, meeting, eating and entertainment places. Usually on Sundays after going to Church, Filipinos flock to malls. Many locals go to mall just to get out of the hot, humid weather and take advatage of the free AC.
We take huge shopping malls for granted here in the Philippines because we have so many of them. We don’t realize that some of our malls rank among the world’s biggest in terms of Gross Leasable Area. Gross Leasable Area is the amount of space devoted to revenue-producing operations like stores, amusements and food.
This is the list of the world’s largest malls according to forbes.com.
1. South China Mall – China
2. Golder Resources Shopping Mall – China
3. Mall of Asia – Philippines
4. West Edmonton Mall – Canada
5. SM Megamall – Philippines

10. King of Prussia Mall – USA
We are giving China a run for its money in terms of the number of large malls. China and India are expected to construct more malls so this list may change in the next few years. But imagine, our country, small compared to China, India, US and Canada has three out of the ten largest malls in the world.
Wow. They should make malling our national pasttime.
