seriously, I would interpret it depending on HOW he said it:

Pattern 1 – Square root of two …short pause ()short enough to be ignored!)…over two

Pattern 2 – Square root of two over two (saying in a quick way)

Answer to Pattern 2 would be, of course, 1.
